Your Temporomandibular Joint or TMJ are the small joints located at both sides of your lower jaw where it attaches to the skull.  This important joint allows you to open and close your mouth. So each time you talk, chew or yawn, these joints are being used.

Patients with TMJ dysfunction may complain of pain in this joint whether at rest or during activities like chewing or opening their mouth. The most common symptoms include:

  • Jaw clicking or popping
  • Pain referral into the face, neck and / or shoulders
  • Grinding
  • Limited jaw opening
  • Joint stiffness
  • Headaches

These conditions may be the result of a number of factors, including trauma (such as a car accident, a blow to the jaw, or a fall on the chin) and overuse (such as persistent clenching of the jaw).

Our therapists at Dunbar Physio are experienced in treating TMJ problems. We will assess your TMJ for mobility and tracking (how well it moves), muscle tension and length of the muscles around the jaw, and neck.

Physiotherapists who practice TMJ therapy at Dunbar Physio include  Jonathan Coelho, Renata Szado, and Dikla Barer.
