Born and raised on Vancouver Island, sports and the outdoors have always been my passion. I have grown up skiing and hiking the local mountains, and have practiced Physio in Whistler, catering specifically to skiing and snowboarding injuries. Yoga, cycling and running are my regular hobbies. Having completed marathons, triathlons and many cycling events, I am experienced in treating the common injuries associated with these sports.
My interest lies in manual therapy. I have successfully completed an advanced diploma in this area, which consisted of 5 additional years of specific coursework and continuous study, followed by a rigorous exam process. As such, I am a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT). I was also a certified trainer for the Canadian Navy.
I have worked extensively with TMJ (Temporal Mandibular Joint) related disorders and have recently completed the most current evidence based practice and treatment techniques associated with these conditions.
Additionally, I am passionate about teaching and have taught at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, where I lived for 3 years. I was also a physiotherapist in the Netherlands, and was exposed to many different clinical techniques. Continuing education at the University level keeps me relevant and current. I now assist in the Master of Physiotherapy Program at the University of British Columbia, teaching graduate students clinical skills, throughout the year.
My goal is to optimize individual well-being, by helping people understand the cause of their pain, and educating them on how to correct it. I work with all sectors of the population, catering to the general public and athletes. I focus on postural correction techniques that are common to work related neck and back pain, motor vehicle accidents, as well as those related to athletic training. My treatments are based on a range of manual therapy techniques, including mobilizations and manipulations, soft tissue release and Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS / dry needling), to restore joint and muscle function. This is combined with exercise therapy to prevent recurrence of injury.

“Renata is amazing. Her careful manipulations during our sessions have the immediate impact of a reduction of any discomfort I may have. I always leave the session feeling much better than when I arrive. Her recommended exercise program to improve my core-strength and flexibility has also made a huge effect in reducing the likelihood and severity of events. She has made a real difference in my quality-of-life.” – John S.
“Fourteen months ago my stopped car was rear ended at high speed, causing a great deal of tissue damage…Renata Szado used Intra Muscular Stimulation (needles) and exercise to treat these problems…the relief afterward was so dramatic…I have been pretty darned diligent about doing the prescribed exercises, and realize that without Renata and her exercises, I could easily have been a basket-case for life.” – Lorna B.
“I have seen several physiotherapists for my chronic back pain over the last 20 years. Renata S. solved my problem! Thanks Renata.” – Cynthia I.
