Dry Needling / Acupuncture

Dry Needling / Acupuncture in Vancouver

Acupuncture in the physio world is known as “Medical” or “Anatomical” Acupuncture. This is distinct from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture based on assessment of the patient’s reports, Pulse and Tongue assessment. Medical Acupuncture draws on the long history of TCM and marries it to the current western approach to medicine.

Medical Acupuncture is the insertion of extremely fine needles into designated “acupuncture points” to stimulate the points. This aims to decrease pain and swelling, promote an anti-inflammatory effect, and improve mobility and wellness.

In Medical Acupuncture, the needles are solid and do not deliver any solution – this is why it is known as a “dry needling” technique. There may be as few as one or as many as 20 needles inserted and they remain in place for around 15 minutes. One may feel a dull, perhaps “achey” feeling when the point is stimulated.

Physiotherapists who practice Acupuncture at Dunbar Physio are  Jon Coelho and Peter Curtain.
